be it for a job, in order to get your inheritance or to fool your nosy neighbours, you are pretending to be married. now the question is, do you want it to be real or can you hardly wait for it to be over?

[ daichi just sort of laughs at that, if only a little self deprecatingly. okay, so maybe he should have trusted suga a little more to tell him ahead of time. maybe he should have brought it up early enough that he didn't spend this long in such a funk. maybe he shouldn't have lied to his mom in the first place and yet here they are. ]

Yeah, but- [ okay no, daichi's going to stop there because he does not want to get punched again, thank you. and knowing suga that was a very viable option. instead he just lets himself relax into it, still feeling absolutely ridiculous and not yet sure why he still kind of feels nervous about the whole thing, and then daichi is shrugging, rubbing at the back of his neck. ]

I also didn't want to deal with bringing a- anyone home to my parents, you know? I wouldn't torture anyone like that. [ no, okay, that's an exaggeration - his parents weren't that bad. a little unnaturally loud, maybe. unnecessarily messy and all over the place. but they weren't embarrassing.

there's also that bit about why he didn't feel comfortable saying girl, but that's not a big deal. this whole situation is a much bigger deal. but then suga's already diving right into it and daichi just sort of...stares. ]

[ that's a lot of maybes to consider, but if he asks suga, he'd only hear that it's best to look to the future and what hasn't happened yet rather than dwelling on what can't be changed. like telling one's parents they're dating their best friend — at least daichi had picked him. which is a thought that startles suga a little, but he knows that he knows the other boy better than anyone else would've. it'd just be like an added level to their existing relationship if anything and it doesn't seem so bad when he thinks about it that way. ]

But you're okay with torturing me? [ his expression changes to one of mock offence for a second before lapsing back into a smile. ]

[ he repeats it with added emphasis as if that'll explain everything. when it becomes clear it won't, he sighs and goes on to explain. ]

You know, how we got together and things like that! I don't want to be caught off-guard if your mom decides to ask me something!

[ there are a lot of maybes, and a lot of the time daichi gets caught up in them. it was easier when it was just volleyball, because volleyball is simple. you did everything you could to win, whether that was training, making decisions, etc. that was easy because no matter what anyone's feelings were, they were all in it for the game. the team. now that it's something as complicated as appeasing his mother, it's just a long list of maybes.

but that's what suga is for, after all. they always seem to be perfectly matched both in and out of volleyball. and maybe it says something that when daichi thought need to find a 'fake' date it was soon followed by suga. maybe there's even more to the way those nervous butterflies in his stomach also translated into excitement. but that was all for another time.

daichi smiles sheepishly - small and only vaguely worried - his hand slipping to the back of his neck. ]

Maybe? I mean- you know them, you know what they can be like. [ does daichi mention that he also had felt uncomfortable with the idea of telling suga he was fake dating anyone else to appease his parents? because he knows that there would be a chance suga wouldn't approve and be a little disappointed in him? not at all.

but then suga's smiling and daichi is breathing again. he's also looking vaguely confused, like he hadn't thought about that at all. ]
