( #002 ) FAKE MARRIED AU

the 'fake married' meme
be it for a job, in order to get your inheritance or to fool your nosy neighbours, you are pretending to be married. now the question is, do you want it to be real or can you hardly wait for it to be over? |
no subject
No — wait, it's not that! [ and it isn't, he thinks. it's not that he doesn't understand how persistent sawamura-san got and he knows that even he'd say anything to get out of a desperate situation, but something about it — the whole idea makes his stomach flip in a strange way, though he's not quite sure why.
instead, he brushes the feeling aside and focuses on trying to make sure that his best friend doesn't think he's some kind of crazy, heartless jerk. ]
Daichi — [ he reaches out to rest his hand on the other boy's shoulder, giving it a light squeeze. his voice takes on a teasing tone because it's always been what helps ease the tension, cutting away at awkward moments before they get out of control. ] You must be really nervous about all this, huh? If it really means that much and if it's only for now, I guess I don't see the harm.
[ see? he's not some kind of monster, after all! oh, but hang on real quick, while he punches his friend in the very arm he'd been holding just a second ago. ]
Not that I'm letting you get off this easy! Why didn't you tell me this at any point before we're supposed to end up at your parents' house?
spam inbox why
it's not that and daichi shouldn't feel hopeful. he shouldn't. this was a miss-step all around on his part and he should want this to work out. because yeah, okay, having his mother off his back would be a really nice. and there isn't anyone he trusts as much as suga to ask to do this. but this is weird, isn't it? weird to ask your best friend to pretend to be dating you. weird to expect your parents to be okay with that. weird, the way that daichi hadn't at all had an issue about thinking of the two of them dating, had actually been pretty excited about it? he thinks. he's not sure.
but then there's the hand on his shoulder, and daichi's eyebrows lift almost hopefully, but also still embarrassed. still guilty. even if the knots in his stomach start to ease a little the more suga talks about it, his light tone, his half-smile. you must be really nervous and daichi lets out a sigh at what follows. lets those knots relax. ]
Seriously? You're okay with this? [ does he sound hopeful? he really hopes he doesn't. he doesn't need more grounds for suga to tease him.
but of course there comes the punch and he winces, letting out a half-nervous laugh. ] Honestly? I didn't think you'd like the idea. I guess I was hoping that if I waited I would figure something else out.
shakes fist at it
Didn't I just say I was? [ truthfully, it's easier to go along with it and not think about the inanity when he sees the hopeful look in the other boy's eyes. he won't tease him about it now, but the start to their trip is definitely not something suga's forgetting any time soon. maybe if it all goes off without a hitch — which is still a big maybe at this point — they can look back and laugh about all of this.
for now, suga shakes his head and sighs. ]
I could've helped you with that, you know! But I guess it's too late now since you weren't able to... [ no matter! he'll just take a deep breath and roll up his sleeves the same way he always does when he's getting ready to start a new project. normally that meant strategizing something for class, or volleyball, but how different could pretending to date someone be? ]
So, what's our story?
oh also hi name change
Yeah, but- [ okay no, daichi's going to stop there because he does not want to get punched again, thank you. and knowing suga that was a very viable option. instead he just lets himself relax into it, still feeling absolutely ridiculous and not yet sure why he still kind of feels nervous about the whole thing, and then daichi is shrugging, rubbing at the back of his neck. ]
I also didn't want to deal with bringing a- anyone home to my parents, you know? I wouldn't torture anyone like that. [ no, okay, that's an exaggeration - his parents weren't that bad. a little unnaturally loud, maybe. unnecessarily messy and all over the place. but they weren't embarrassing.
there's also that bit about why he didn't feel comfortable saying girl, but that's not a big deal. this whole situation is a much bigger deal. but then suga's already diving right into it and daichi just sort of...stares. ]
Our what?
it's perfect tbh
But you're okay with torturing me? [ his expression changes to one of mock offence for a second before lapsing back into a smile. ]
Our story!
[ he repeats it with added emphasis as if that'll explain everything. when it becomes clear it won't, he sighs and goes on to explain. ]
You know, how we got together and things like that! I don't want to be caught off-guard if your mom decides to ask me something!
thank you thank you
but that's what suga is for, after all. they always seem to be perfectly matched both in and out of volleyball. and maybe it says something that when daichi thought need to find a 'fake' date it was soon followed by suga. maybe there's even more to the way those nervous butterflies in his stomach also translated into excitement. but that was all for another time.
daichi smiles sheepishly - small and only vaguely worried - his hand slipping to the back of his neck. ]
Maybe? I mean- you know them, you know what they can be like. [ does daichi mention that he also had felt uncomfortable with the idea of telling suga he was fake dating anyone else to appease his parents? because he knows that there would be a chance suga wouldn't approve and be a little disappointed in him? not at all.
but then suga's smiling and daichi is breathing again. he's also looking vaguely confused, like he hadn't thought about that at all. ]
Um. [ yeah no he definitely didn't. ] I don't know. Does it really matter? Couldn't it have just...happened?
